Allan and Wendy Pluke enjoy a charmed active life in their retirement village not far from my home in Pyes Pa, Tauranga. When asked about their lives, they both smile shyly and tell me that they haven’t done much at all. Yet, Wendy found her way to New Zealand from Scotland and Allan has many tricks up his sleeve from his time in the army, as a plumber and a stevedore.
The list of their hobbies is as long as my arm and they are both kind, witty and very engaging.

During our time together, I keep forgetting that it was Allan’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis that brought me to their door. We share many laughs, stories and a few cheeky moments and before long I feel as if I was visiting relatives in my old village back in Germany.
